Are you on vacation during the municipal elections, do you have to work, or are you unable to vote due to medical reasons? Then you must give a proxy to someone who can vote on your behalf. We refer to the person who cannot vote as the proxy giver and the person voting for you as the proxy holder.
To whom can I give a proxy?
You can give it to a neighbor, friend, or family member… it just needs to be someone who is eligible to vote (a voter). It does not have to be someone living in Schaerbeek. However, the vote must be cast at a polling station in Schaerbeek. Therefore, it’s best to choose someone who lives nearby, or let us know via the form at the bottom of this page, and we’ll gladly assist you.
Important: A voter can only cast one proxy vote. So, if you and someone else are going on vacation, each of you needs to find a separate proxy holder.
What types of proxies are there?
• You are ill or unable to vote due to medical reasons. In this case, a doctor will fill out the proxy form.
• If you have to work or are abroad for work, your employer must confirm your employment in Belgium or abroad on the proxy form.
• Are you on vacation on election day? Then you (the proxy giver) must go to the Schaerbeek city hall with your ID card, the completed proxy form, and a proof of your absence.
If you don’t have proof, confirm your absence with a sworn statement by filling out form P2.
The elections office is open by appointment (with minimal waiting times) or without an appointment during city hall opening hours.
• You can't vote due to study reasons? Ask your school or university to fill out the proxy form. You will give this to the proxy holder.
• Are you self-employed and working on election day? Then you must go to Schaerbeek city hall with the completed proxy form and a sworn statement (form P2) in which you declare that you cannot go to the polling station.
Once the proxy form is fully completed, you give it to the person you are assigning as the proxy holder.
The elections office is open by appointment (with minimal waiting times) or without an appointment during city hall opening hours.
Please note that the form must be fully completed, and both of you must sign the document at the bottom!
How do I vote with a proxy?
The proxy holder needs to bring:
The fully completed proxy form
Their own voting invitation
Their own ID card
The voting process is exactly the same. However, you must first cast your own vote before voting on behalf of the proxy giver.
