SHAERBEEK – Good news for Schaerbeek parents. The request for the 'parental travel authorization' document from the Municipality of Schaerbeek, for children traveling alone or accompanied by other adults, can now be made online. Moreover, this service is free and accessible via the e-counter: https://schaerbeek.e-guichet.be/

When a child travels alone or accompanied by others, the Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs recommends obtaining a written 'parental travel authorization.' Until recently, this document was only available in paper format from the municipality. Thanks to the new online tool, a Schaerbeek parent can now request the document 24/7 for a child registered at their address and receive it immediately by email.

'Regularly, I would receive an SMS or email in the evening or over the weekend from worried parents who had forgotten to arrange the parental authorization just hours before their departure. Now that it can be requested 24/7, it significantly reduces stress for parents,' explains Van den Hove.

This new service has been developed in collaboration with the company CIVADIS, and starting at the end of December, Schaerbeek will go even further: every Schaerbeek parent, regardless of the child’s place of residence, will be able to obtain the document.

The online request for documents has seen a significant increase:

  • In 2021: 7,071 requests

  • In 2023: 51,584 requests

  • In 2024: already 29,447 requests (as of June)

With this new service, Schaerbeek continues its commitment to providing modern and accessible municipal services. This modernization also frees up municipal staff to assist citizens with other procedures.
